Allopurinol is an oral drug used in patients either recently undergone chemotherapy or for some other reasons displaying increased urine acid amount in blood or urine, or having gout conditions (a metabolic disease characterized by painful inflammation of certain joints, especially of the big toe and foot, caused by deposits of sodium urate in them). Allopurinol is also used to treat certain renal disorders in patients with experienced calcium oxalate kidney. The meshanisms of the drug are based on its xanthine oxidase inhibitive characteristics.
Allopurinol is taken in accordance with the doctor’s prescription instructions. Take the drug by mouth and wash it down with plenty of water. Drinking more fluids (but not caffeine-containing drinks) in general is very helpful while you are on Allopurinol therapy as it helps to increase the output of urine and urine acid. It is also recommended to take Allopurinol after your meals as it helps to avoid problems with stomach for persons susceptible to the drug’s side effects like constipation and diarrhea.
